Job Title : LEGAL OFFICER – CS/CS&LA/02/03/2025

Job Summary
This is the entry grade for this cadre of staff. An Officer at this level will work under guidance and supervision of Principal Officer, Legal.
Job Description
a. Duties and responsibilities
Prepare and file legal documents at court registries, such as plaints, statements of defenses, response to claims, appeals, list of documents and witnesses, witness statements, bundle of documents, applications, etc.
Represent the Company in courts (Superior and Subordinate Courts), tribunals, and before government agencies.
Conduct pre-trial briefings and site visits.
Conduct research and analysis of legal matters they are handling.
Communicate with colleagues, judges and others involved in the court case.
Interpret laws, rulings and proffer legal opinions on the implications of Court decisions on the Company business.
Prepare letters and general correspondences as regards matters they are handling.
Engage in alternative dispute resolution of disputea involving the Company .
Provide guidance, advice, and/or training and educational programs, to improve business understanding of related laws and regulatory requirements.
Provide legal advice to all Departments of the Company in various areas including but not limited to commercial and corporate transactions for protection of the Company’s interests.
Liaise with Company advocates and ensure efficient and proper provision of legal advice and consultancy services.
Draw, negotiate, vet and ensure execution of contracts and agreements emanating from all departments of the Company.
Advice on legal soundness of each contract.
Ensure conditions under the contract are strictly adhered to.
Conduct legal research and analysis on various areas of law as may be assigned from time to time.
Draw leases and other conveyancing documents relating to properties in the Company.
Assist the Company to recover its’ debts from both the large and small power consumers.
Making claims from the banks of those debtors who are large power consumers and have valid guarantees.
Instructing external lawyers to sue for recovery of debts from the consumers.
Follow up in consultation with external lawyers to ensure that debt recovery cases in courts are concluded and judgments enforced.
Carry out the responsibility of all secretarial functions and provide the guidance required for compliance with statutory legislation and regulatory issues as may be appropriate to the Company’s business.

b. Person Specifications
For appointment to this position, an Officer must have:

Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized Institution.
Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
Member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing
At least 1 year work experience.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Certified Public Secretary (K) in good standing is an added advantage

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Carrying out Intellectual Property audits and register identified patents, trademarks industrial designs and copyright.
2. Overseeing and rollout a corporate innovation system
3. Facilitating the development of skills, processes, values, and mind-sets to anchor innovation across the business
4. Developing the Company innovation policy
5. Overseeing the annual G2G technical seminar to tap on innovative new ideas
6. Overseeing and driving quick-wins (rapid results initiatives) implementation
7. Managing an online innovation dashboard where ideas, concepts are posted for onward scoping and implementation
8. Developing metrices to continually measure the Company’s innovation performance as well as its progress in embedding innovation as a core competence.
9.Coordinate Intellectual property protection to secure the company’s intellectual capital.
10. Ensuring compliance with QMS/EMS, Safety, statutory and regulatory requirements.
11.Monitoring and evaluating employees performance in the section
12Preparing sectional annual budget & procurement plan and ensuring prudent fund management.

Person Specifications

For appointment to this grade a candidate must have: –
1.Bachelors degree in Project Management/Business/Engineering or related field from a recognized institution.
2. Masters degree in Project Management/Business/Engineering or related field from a recognized institution.
3. Experience of ten (10) years relevant work experience, four (4) of which are at Management role.
4. A member of a relevant professional body in good standing.
5. Meet the requirements of leadership and integrity as prescribed in Chapter 6 of the constitution of Kenya.
